What can be built with straw bales?
Straw is a great building material; very strong, very durable and highly insulating. It has enormous appeal to self-builders but increasingly, its wide ranging benefits are being realised by a wider audience.
Here we can see some examples of straw bale buildings of varying size and use:
>> small >> medium >> family homes >> larger buildings
You don’t need a lot of money or space to have a go at straw bale building. Simple structures such as these are a great way to get started and learn the basic techniques.
- Outside loo
- Wendy house
- Garden shelter
- Wall
These small structures use straw bales because they are fun to build, creative and inexpensive. As buildings get larger, the superior performance of the straw becomes more important.

- Jim Carfrae's timber frame and straw bale house in Totnes (see photo below)
Jim says “Traditionally jointed Douglas fir frame with an insulating wrap of lime rendered bales. One of the interesting features is the lack of a need for compression of the bales because they are stacked on edge."
